“A warm welcome to everyone”, from Sandy Clayton, Owner and Principal
Thank you for your interest in Toadhall Montessori Nurseries, Meithrin and Out of School Academy. I hope our website provides you with all the information you need to know about the high-quality, excellent rated, care and Montessori education we have been providing for over 39 years, since November 1987, thus allowing you to make an informed decision about your childcare needs.
Our website gives you extensive information about our Creche, Nursery, Meithrin (Welsh Nursery) and Out of School Academy settings, which are all within a short walking distance of each other, in Llandaff North, Cardiff.
My amazing team and I, understand it is a huge decision in making the right choice in childcare for your little ones and older children. We hope the following information supports you in making this important choice.
Our aim at Toadhall is to provide continuity of Montessori care and education for babies, toddlers, children and young people from 0 to 12 years, allowing them to ‘become the best they can be’, which in turn, gives you complete peace of mind that your children are safe and happy and your childcare needs are fully met from babyhood to the start of their adolescence.
Having gained amazing feedback from many of our parents, over the past 39 years, the main reasons they choose Toadhall Montessori Creche, Nursery, Meithrin and Out of School Academy are because:-
Toadhall Montessori Nurseries, including our Meithrin (Welsh Nursery) and Out of School Academy has been based in Llandaff North, Cardiff, under my ownership and leadership for over 39 years. It is the longest established Childcare setting and Montessori Centre for Early Years in Cardiff. We have gained an ‘Excellent Rated’ reputation from Care Inspectorate for Wales (CIW) and from past and present parents, for providing the highest standards of high-quality care and education for children between the ages of six weeks to 12 years.
The philosophy and ethos of Toadhall Montessori, is based upon my 55 years of knowledge, experience and skills, gained as a Qualified Early Years Teacher, Qualified Montessori Teacher, Lecturer, Trainer and Consultant in Early Years.
I have a strong commitment and belief in the Montessori approach and have always applied this world acclaimed pedagogy, to my own professional practice, when working across all care and education sectors and with all ages of children and young people.
As an Owner, Registered Individual, Principal and dedicated Early Years Practitioner and Leader, I am continuously undertaking research in this field and keeping up to date with new legislation, initiatives and ideas within early years and primary education, to ensure Toadhall Montessori stays at the forefront of ‘nurturing childcare and educational excellence – thus enabling everyone to be the best they can be’.
I am totally committed to providing the highest standards of quality provision for every parent/carer and child who attends Toadhall Montessori Nurseries, Meithrin and Out of School Academy.
The importance of embracing all aspects of inclusivity, equality, diversity and anti-racist practice, are at the core of everything we do at Toadhall Montessori. This is something I am passionate about, due to my own personal experiences of having a child, who was born with ‘complex needs’ and for whom we are still navigating the ALN system some 37 years later!!
I understand first hand, the challenges and concerns, every parent/carer/ faces, when their child has additional learning needs and the journey they need to take.
My belief is that everyone at Toadhall Montessori is respected for who they are and for what they bring, as individuals, to our settings.
At Toadhall Montessori, our aim is to give every child ‘a flying start’ in life, to enable them ‘to be the best they can be’. We work in partnership with all parent/s/carer/s, developing close relationships to ensure every child’s individual needs are fully met. We also encourage participation from every parent/carer, in their child’s learning and development, to ensure they have a voice and are recognised and respected as a strong and respected advocate for the child/ren.
Each of our amazing settings have been specially adapted, furnished and resourced to the highest standards, to provide Montessori indoor and outdoor environments that are both age and developmentally appropriate, irrespective of age, gender, race, religion, culture and individual needs.
The Creche caters for babies and toddlers, aged six weeks to 2½ years. The Nursery caters for children aged 2 years to 4/5 years. Our Welsh Nursery caters for children aged 2 -5 years.
The Out of School Academy, which incorporates the After School Academy and the Holiday Academy, currently caters for children from 4 years, who have commenced full time school ,up to 12 years.
All our settings are within close walking distance of the Taff Trail, Hailey Park, Llandaff Fields and Forest Farm, all of which are fantastic resources, for ‘Learning in the Outdoors’. Llandaff North railway station is also close by, enabling trips further afield to Barry Island, Porthcawl as well as Cardiff Museum and Art Gallery.
The Creche, Nursery, Meithrin (Welsh Nursery) and Out of School Academy, have been established with the same philosophy, ethos, vision and beliefs, which Maria Montessori herself, developed over 120 years ago, in 1906, in Via Dei Marsi 59, San Lorenzo in Rome. Here, she developed the very first ‘Casa dei Bambini’ or ‘Children’s House’.
Maria Montessori created a beautiful, harmonious, ’family’ environment for all children, that was small, homely, warm, loving and nurturing, thus allowing parents to go out to work, feeling totally reassured their little ones and older children, were being cared for and educated in a unique way – namely the Montessori way!
Having completed extensive research and studies into the Montessori Approach and visited the very first Casa dei Bambini in Rome, which is still operating today, as Maria Montessori envisaged, I am certain that the Montessori environment and approach, we create today in the 21st Century, for every child, their parents and families, at Toadhall, enables all that experience it, ‘to be the best they can be’ and provided ‘learning for life’.
Toadhall Montessori Nurseries, Meithrin and Out of School Academy is registered and approved, by the Care Inspectorate for Wales, (CIW). We are inspected by CIW, to ensure our high standards are continually maintained and enhanced.

As stated earlier, Parents/Carer/s choose Toadhall for their child because of the highly acclaimed, Montessori approach which is at the core of our approach and the excellent reputation and CIW inspections, we have gained, over the 39 years, we have been operating.
Children attend Toadhall Montessori, from various suburbs of Cardiff and further afield.
